"Late-modern liberalism might have a certain tendency toward suicide."

“Late-modern liberalism might have a certain tendency toward suicide.”

Ross Douthat, Cracks in the Liberal Order

I’m not naturally inclined to go along with Douthat’s pronouncements about ‘movements’ and our rapid descent from a halcyon golden age. But the erratic unraveling of the postmodern – and the lurching, unlubricated, and violent pirouette into the postnormal – suggests there may be in fact a suicidal tendency in our political conventions. We may be pulling the system apart without anything at hand to replace it.
