Catarina Fake, The Age of the Cockroach
Catarina Fake thinks the go-go good times are over for high tech, and a new austerity is coming. She cites the 2008 RIP powerpoint of Sequoia.
But this is not the same economy of 2008, is it? There is a fabulous amount of money on the sidelines, looking for any sort of an upside, in a world with no obvious low risk home.
That doesn’t mean that VCs as a class won’t decide to change their plans. There is also no reason for the European political elite to buy into austerity, either. It is a collective mania, not some deep understanding of the laws of the universe.
Maybe Fake is channeling what he’s hearing in the zeitgeist of Silicon Valley. Twitter is laying off, HP is being broken in two: so, it’s time for a downturn.
The collapse of a Unicorn – like Dropbox or Evernote – could be the real indicator that we’re in new territory.
