“I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the contradictory personality traits of a good founder. You want someone who is stubborn yet open-minded. You want someone who is dedicated but when they get new data is able to change their mind — but not too often. You can learn about people by working with them and watching how they handle tough scenarios. But it’s really hard to tell in a short period. We get tricked all the time and agonize about the mistakes we’ve made — the founders we’ve funded who failed or founders who we thought were really bad who went on to do well. But sometimes I don’t think we did anything wrong. Sometimes it’s just bad luck.”
