Farmed salmon leaders set new benchmark for industry sustainability reporting

Farmed salmon © WWFLisbon, Portugal:  Setting a new benchmark in industry transparency that WWF would like to see widely copied, the Global Salmon Initiative (GSI) today made available detailed information on member company and regional progress on industry-wide sustainability goals.

The GSI Sustainability Dashboard, released at The Economist World Ocean Summit in Lisbon this morning, covers the operations of 14 member companies collectively producing around half of the world's farmed salmon.

"This is the first time a global food sector has collectively reported on its journey to sustainability, let alone in such a detailed and transparent manner," said Piers Hart, Global Lead for Aquaculture at WWF.  "We strongly encourage other production sectors and platforms to follow this example.  WWF will be closely following the annual reports looking for improvements in environmental and social performance against indicators set, as well as any further progress towards meeting the objective of 100% Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification by 2020."

The GSI was created in 2013 with the support of WWF with the aim of drastically reducing the negative impact of salmon production on some of the world's most ecologically important regions.

"This is the first time, that we are seeing an industry initiative taking such firm and transparent action holding each of their members accountable for progress made towards a shared ambitious goal. WWF hopes that this will spill over into other sectors and inspire similar action. If it does, this could be a real game-changer" said Richard Holland, Director of WWF's Market Transformation Initiative.

"We have seen many powerful commitments towards 'deforestation-free' supply-chains for example.  A commitment to transparent, attributable and public reporting of actual progress made by companies, similar to what the GSI has just pioneered, would dramatically strengthen the credibility of other commitments.
"The Consumer Goods Forum, for example, would be a prime candidate for such an initiative. I hope the CEOs meeting this summer in New York take notice and hopefully can agree to strengthen their platform's commitment by adding a similar reporting mechanism."
